The East Bay Traditional Jazz Society will sponsor our 17th Annual Jr./Sr. High School Jazz Festival. Our festival will be located at the John F. Kennedy High School outdoor amphitheater. This venue is located in the south west corner of the school, adjacent to the music room. Kennedy High School’s address is 39999 Blacow Road, Fremont, California. Each twenty five piece band will perform the music of Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Chick Webb, Johnny Mercer, Dave Brubeck and other composers. Each band will perform a variety of jazz standards from back in the big band era to modern day compositions. For the continuous music goal, the Jazzinators will play the music of Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Joe ‘King’ Oliver and Lu Watters between each band’s intermission.
All of this “fun music” will begin at 11:15 am with the music of Horner Hornets Junior High Jazz Ensemble led by Mr. Paul Lorigan. Starting on the hour the following bands will produce the jazz sound they have been working on since the beginning of the school year: Thornton Thunderbolts Jazz Ensemble directed by Ross Gershenson, The Jazz Pickles directed by Mr Aaron Parihar, American Eagle Jazz Ensemble directed by Mr. Richard Wong, Irvington Viking Jazz Ensemble directed by Mr. Charlie Rodda and closing out our youth festival will be the Kennedy Titan Jazz Ensemble directed by Mr Bob Sterling. We want to thank Mr. Sterling for allowing us to use this excellent venue and equipment for our festival. Another side light is the name of the group from Concord, the Jazz Pickles, of whom their student leader, Aaron Parihar said the name of the band originally came from the Invisibl Skratch Piklz. Realizing that very few could pronounce the name of their group, they changed the name to the Jazz Pickles. I want to thanks Mr. Matt Finders for introducing us to Aaron.
Each jazz band is extra-curricular, which means they and their teacher usually trudge into the music room before school begins to rehearse their music and develop their improvisational skills. We will take donations to help promote each band’s music library. Our Jazzinators perform to provide funds for their Scholarships to Jazz Camps in California.
Lastly, Kennedy will have their Flea Market on this same day, so expect a two-for-one crowd…hope all will enjoy the music, sun, food and drink sold by the Kennedy Booster Club.
